Discover Scuba for Free

This free resort course (exclusive to guests of Small Hope Bay Lodge) is designed for beginners who want to try scuba diving for the first time. Our experienced instructors will teach you to dive right off our dock, in water you can stand up in. Children under 10 can try SASY or Bubblemaker, a gentle introduction to surface and underwater swimming with an air supply.

Our Dive Masters

Our experienced dive team guides all levels through Andros island’s deep blues with a focus on quality experiences and scenic enjoyment while handling the rest.

A Variety of Dives

With dozens of dive sites within a 15-minute boat ride from our dock, it’s rare to dive the same site more than once during your stay. Our weekly scuba diving schedule includes colorful coral gardens, wrecks, reefs, walls, caverns, and open ocean blue holes, as well as a shark observation dive.

Get PADI or SSI Certified

Our Dive Center offers both PADI and SSI certification courses, including Open Water Diver, Adventure Diver, and Advanced Open Water Diver. Specialty classes include certifications for Enriched Air Diver, Underwater Naturalist, Night Diver, Wreck Diver, and more. We happily accept referrals from diver certification agencies too.

Diving FAQ

Should I bring my own dive equipment?

You’re welcome to bring your own gear — we have designated cubbies at the dock for each room, so storing your equipment is easy and secure. If you’d rather travel light, no problem! We offer dive gear rentals including regulators, BCDs, snorkel gear, dive computers, dive lights, and optional wetsuits for our warm waters. Best of all, you’ll keep the same gear for the duration of your stay, so you can get comfortable with your setup and focus on the fun.

What kind of diving do you have?

There’s a little something for every kind of explorer. From shallow reefs perfect for beginners to thrilling wall dives that drop thousands of feet, Small Hope offers access to wrecks, caverns, blue holes, shark dives, shallow reefs, coral gardens, false walls, and more vibrant snorkeling spots. Whether you’re into underwater photography, marine life, or heart-pumping adventure — you’ll find it here.

How close are you dive sites?

Our dive sites are just minutes from shore. The Tongue of the Ocean — a deep ocean trench that drops over 6,000 feet — begins right offshore, offering world-class diving without long boat rides.

Can my kids dive? Can they go on the boat?

Absolutely. Our dive program is designed with families in mind. Kids 10 and up can try scuba with our Discover Scuba Diving course — free for guests — and follow it up with a shallow dive alongside our certified instructors. For the younger ones, our Bubble Maker Program introduces little adventurers to diving in a fun and safe way. Non-divers are always welcome on the boat or can enjoy other fun activities on land and in the water.

How long do I need to wait to fly after diving?

To stay safe, we recommend waiting at least 18–24 hours after your final dive before flying. This allows your body enough time to eliminate residual nitrogen and helps prevent decompression sickness.

What is the water temperature? Do I need a wetsuit?

The water here is warm year-round, usually ranging from 75°F (24°C) in winter to 85°F (29°C) in summer. Many guests are comfortable in just a swimsuit or shorty wetsuit, but if you tend to get cold easily, a full wetsuit is a good idea — especially in winter months.

Are there child care services while I’m out on a dive?

Small Hope is a family-oriented resort and a natural playground for kids to enjoy activities on Andros Island, like making sandcastles, snorkeling, biking, batik making, and swimming in blue holes, with day and evening babysitting services available.

I’ve never been scuba diving — can I try it at Small Hope?

Experience our complimentary “Discover Scuba Diving” course which is free for guests of Small Hope Bay Lodge, followed by an opportunity for a shallow dive.

Do I need to book a full dive package to go scuba diving?

Scuba diving can be arranged as part of our comprehensive diving packages, or guests can opt for standalone scuba diving sessions.

Are there options for non-divers or beginner divers?

We also have a variety of activities tailored for non-divers, ensuring there are always engaging options available for everyone.

What time do the dive boats go out?

We set sail every morning at 9am and return around lunch time. Around 2pm the dive boat goes out again and returns to the resort around 4pm. Weather permitting.

Can I book specific dives in advance?

We do not schedule dives in advance. This is due to the uncertain nature of the weather in Andros, The Bahamas. Dives are scheduled the night before with the Small Hope Bay Lodge dive team.
